God, John, why are you wearing a tie?

and John U, visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution, the Manuel S. Heller Professor of Law,

at the University of California, Berkeley, and former Deputy Assistant Attorney General

in the Bush administration.

Fellas, good to talk to you. Here's my opener for you guys today. Graduation season is upon us.

And I was recently a part of one of these ceremonies. First time and a long time I've been to one.

And I had sort of forgotten what they're like.

So I have to ask you guys as faculty members.

I mean, there's the pageantry of the whole thing.

You guys get to wear the cool outfits that kind of make you look learned,

kind of make you look like one of the gayer characters from Hogwarts.

But it's a lot.

And you guys are doing this over and over again.

When you're faculty, are these things enjoyable,

or are they just utter drudgery after a while?

Well, there's two, this is a distinction to be made.

There are generally two ceremonies. One is a mass ceremony done at the university level in which the entire student body is collected. They'll do this in a large place like Madison Square Garden or on the long of the University of Chicago. And there are no individual activities there. It's just the dean on behalf of the school
