I imagine that most crime fiction fans have a mental list of their favourite tropes and plot devices.

I know I do, and it's always a pleasure to encounter them out there in the wild as I'm reading my way through as much golden age detective fiction as possible.

It isn't often that I run into most or all of them in the same work, though. That's too much to hope for. Let me give you a short list

of things I like, and you can tell me if that sounds likely. Among other things, I enjoy mysteries

that feature secretaries, details about journalism and all the media, clever twists, moral commentary,

compelling narrators, and sometimes inverted plots where you're told who commits the crime at the

beginning. If you think about your own selection of favourites, I'm sure it will be similarly varied.

Imagine my surprise then, when a couple of years ago I came across a short story that contained

all of those things I just named. A clever, backwards, twisty tale, starring a secretary and heavily
