I was wondering if you could comment for a few moments on the Catholic teaching of subsidiarity

1:24.0

was expressed in the catechism and whether or not you, I guess, personally think that our

1:30.3

federal government does a good job abiding by this teaching, you know, with respect to its ever-expanding

1:36.4

size and programs and policies.

1:39.1

Yeah, so two different questions. So I'll define it first. And in the simplest terms,

1:46.2

subsidiarity is a principle in which you handle problems at the localist level, so at the most

1:55.2

immediate local level. So to use an example, let's say you were overcharged for something at the local hardware store.

2:06.6

We wouldn't want the federal government to come into that situation and settle it for you.

2:13.4

You'd rather have that taken care of between you and the store manager, for example.

2:19.0

2:24.8

or what kind of items you can put in your yard.

2:28.3

Well, you don't want the federal government coming in and telling you what you can and can't do.
