Summary

Patrick fields tough, personal questions about Catholic morality, including whether participation in military special forces can align with conscience, especially when lethal orders are at play. He also addresses concerns about valid sacraments, attending non-Catholic religious ceremonies, and the meaning of redemptive suffering, bringing stories from his own life and practical Church teachings into each call.

Good morning. Yes, sir. Good morning. Wow, I'm on the air. You sure are. How old are you?

0:49.7

I'm 14. That's great. 14 is a great age.

0:54.4

So you must have some deep thought on your mind.

0:59.2

Well, I was considering joining the military and a special forces career has always appealed

1:07.3

to me.

1:08.3

But the special forces are often used to assassinate people.

1:15.0

And is that, can a Catholic man in good conscience be a part of that?

1:21.6

It would depend.

1:22.9

This is a very good question.

1:24.8

So it would depend on three things. What is the object of the act itself,

1:30.3

in this case killing somebody? The second would be, what is your intention? And the third would be,

1:35.5

what are the circumstances? And you can apply this test in general to dilemmas in life. Is this a

1:42.8

good thing to do or not a good thing to do? You can apply these same

1:45.4

principles to this. So here's how I would take a look at that. In special forces, you're under

1:53.7

the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which stipulates that your commanding officer cannot give you an immoral order. In other words,

2:02.8

to do something that would be illegal. And when you sign up for the military, I myself

2:07.8

was never in the military, but I know plenty of people who are. And when you sign up to be

2:13.6

in the military, when you are out there doing your job in the military

2:20.4

like a special forces. One of the overriding, you might call it a prime directive, is that
