Summary

How do Catholic theologians decide what is literal and what is figurative? It starts with the early church fathers, who learned directly from the apostles. Through tradition and scripture, they've preserved Jesus’ teachings, ensuring the authentic meaning is handed down through generations. Patrick explores key biblical passages that illustrate this continuing tradition.

Dear Patrick, how is it that the rosary only began 800 years ago?

0:46.0

How is that?

0:49.1

Well, I look at it this way, Lori.

1:11.5

The rosary in its present form that we're familiar with does date back about 800 years ago to the time of St. Dominic, who is the founder of the Order of Preachers. We know them today more commonly as the Dominicans. And you probably already know that if you know that it goes back 800 years. But the rosary in some form, a more primitive form, goes back a lot longer ago than that.

1:17.3

Prior to that, it was known as the Salter of Mary, P-S-A-L-T-E-R.

1:26.8

And the reason it was called that is because the rosary, in its current form, is patterned after the Psalms, the 150 Psalms. So the 150, if you're praying all three of the traditional

mysteries of the rosary, you have 150 Hail Mary's. And so it's patterned after the book of

Psalms in the Old Testament. And even from ancient times, there were early, let's say, inchoate versions of the

rosary that was not necessarily widespread or universally recognizable, but the custom of praying

these prayers asking Mary, the mother of God, to pray for us and intercede for us that does go back to

ancient times. So I think that's the best way to answer your question. The rosary in the form

that we know it goes back that far, but in some way or another it was not at all uncommon to invoke
