Summary

We delved into the power of prayer and explored its deeply personal and universal aspects. We discussed the significance of praying with sincerity, whether for our own needs or for bigger global issues. The Lord's Prayer served as a guide for understanding prayer's components. We tackled tough topics like the spiritual journey during times of mortal sin and the healing process post-divorce, finding comfort in the Catholic Church's teachings. We even discussed the sacredness of the Mass and the importance of sacraments like baptism and the Eucharist for salvation. Let's carry these reflections into our daily lives and remember to support each other in prayer, always with faith and love.

  • Patrick continues his conversation with Ed from the end of the previous hour taking about mortal sin and confession
  • Bee - I used to be divorced and remarried. I want to encourage a caller yesterday who is going through an annulment. Thank you Patrick for showing me the Catholic faith!
  • Paul – How can I explain salvation through sacraments to a non-believer? (11:06)
  • Anna (email) – Should a priest be allowed to have his dog with him at Mass? (22:07)
  • Jonathon - Can you flesh out why we go to a priest instead of telling God our sins directly?
  • Margaret - Is it selfish to pray for yourself when it comes to little things when there are big things out there?
  • Mike - My son hates my guts. What should I do to help him?

We kind of ran out of time with you, Ed, in Monrovia, California.

0:35.1

So I'm glad you held over.

You had another question about confession, I think. So let's take

0:38.8

this in there. Yeah, thanks. So just as a follow up, so when you're in a state of mortal sin,

0:45.3

I understand the necessity to get to confession as soon as possible. But in that time period

0:50.5

between committing a mortal sin and getting to confession, I think I've heard you

0:56.6

say, your soul is essentially dead. So, so any prayers, rosary, anything during that period of time,

1:03.8

is that all in vain? Over. No. And here's the distinction. That's a very good question you're asking. If you are unrepentant and you're in the state of mortal sin and you have no interest in changing, you're not sorry for your sins, maybe you're planning to commit some more mortal sins, what have you, whatever that may be, then yes, all of those things, like if you were to

1:28.0

pray a rosary or do something, there's no spiritual benefit because of the deadness of the soul.

1:34.7

But if in the interim, before you went to confession, if you did repent, now you obviously

1:40.5

have to repent and go directly to God, be sorry for your sins before you're even

1:45.2

prepared to go to confession. So that precedes confession in any case, if you're going to make a good

1:50.5

confession. But let's say that you have several mortal sins and you experience deep contrition. You're

1:59.2

sorry for what you did. Lord, I don't want to do this anymore.

2:02.3

I'm going to go to confession. You know, I'm going to go as soon as I can, maybe this weekend,

2:07.4

what have you. Well, in that case, you have been forgiven of your sins. Now, you haven't been

2:13.2

absolved sacramentally, and that is a necessity if you can get to confession.
