Let's start with this one that came in from Ashley. this is actually a message to me, not so much by email, but he did come in on Twitter, and she says,

Patrick, what does state of grace mean? Ashley, this is actually a message to me, not so much by email, but it did come in on Twitter,

and she says, Patrick, what does state of grace mean? If someone is to die in a state of grace, do they bypass purgatory and go straight to heaven? If we have residual sin when we die,

why go to confession? Well, a very good question. Actually, a couple questions rolled into one.

So let's start by defining it.

The state of grace means that you have the grace of God in your soul. Now, this is a condition

that you, in your lifetime, throughout your life, hopefully you're always in the state of grace.

If you commit a mortal sin, then you're not in the state of grace.

You're in the state of mortal sin.

John talks about that in 1st John chapter 5, where he says that all wrongdoing is sin,

but there's some sin that is not mortal.

So when you're in mortal sin, you're not in the state of grace, and the way to get out of mortal sin, if you are unbaptized, is to be baptized.

If you have been baptized and you've fallen into mortal sin,

then the sacrament of confession is the sacrament established by Jesus for you

to be able to get back into the state of grace.

So this is where the grace of God is in you.

As St. Paul says in Romans, that the life of God, God's grace, his presence is poured out,
