0:36.1

father John hello Patrick God bless you, and I just

0:41.2

wanted to ask, as the diocese increased, I have been canceled, and I would like to ask you,

0:48.3

what do you think the difference is between a vow of obedience that a religious takes and what a promise of obedience is that a diocesan priest or a secular priest takes to his bishop.

1:01.8

Because I see your analogy with Padre Pio, with the last caller, to, you know, make us want to ask that question.

1:12.2

And as a canceled priest and as a member of the coalition for canceled priests, I would

1:16.1

like to hear your thoughts.

1:17.9

Well, I can only say what I believe the church teaches on this issue, and that is that

1:23.1

religious, as you know, they take vows when they enter into religious life or when they make

1:30.4

their final vows, let's say, and the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience bind them for life

1:37.7

1:43.9

know, do not take vows. They're not religious,

1:46.9

as you know, and yet the priest makes a formal promise of obedience to his bishop. So there's a

1:54.3

similarity there to the vow, but it's not, you know, canonically speaking the same as a vow. But I would

2:00.1

say in the case of a parish priest, it has similar force.

2:04.5

So that's my thought in a nutshell.

2:07.8

No, and I do appreciate that, and I would say on a lot of topics, that's certainly true.

2:13.7

But I think that people have to realize that a diocesan priest, when I was ordained 15 years ago,

2:19.7

I took a promise to be a co-worker with the bishop, okay, not to be a subservient, all right,
