I have to respond to an email from Susan who's listening in Maryland.

Thanks for writing in Susan.

She heard me talking about at the penitential right in Mass, where we say,

I confess to Almighty God and to my brothers and sisters

that I have greatly sent.

And then there's the line in that prayer,

through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.

And I was just expressing, we were talking about irritation at Mass,

something that might irritate you. And I was sharing that that

irritates me when I hear people, as I inevitably do, who mispronounce the word, and they say,

through my most grievous fault. And there is no such word. Grievous is not a word. The word is

grievous. It's just a minor thing. No big deal. But it's one of my little pet peeves.

And so Susan wrote it and said, Patrick, I'm confused. What do you hear and what is correct?

Not to justify your annoyance, but did I hear you say that there is no word grievous? What are we

supposed to say? Well, maybe you misheard me, or maybe I didn't say it clearly, but grievous is the right word.

That's the word as it appears in the prayer, grievous, a grievous injury, etc.

But some people will mispronounce it, and it's not intentional, I'm sure.
