Summary

Remember the golden rule: treat others the way you want to be treated? You probably learned it in kindergarten. Chances are you haven’t really upped your kindness game since. Most of us haven’t. The older we get, the more responsibilities, anxieties, and personal pursuits take over. And kindness simply doesn’t make the to-do list. It’s not that we think kindness is any less important than in kindergarten. No, it’s the opposite. Most people agree that practicing kindness is more important than ever. But there’s a gap, between what we say we value as a society, and what we do. In this episode, we’re getting to the source on how to close that “kindness gap.” Houston Kraft, a kindness advocate and educator, explains how we can overcome what gets in the way of deep kindness and start incorporating it into our daily lives. François Clemmons, also known as Officer Clemmons on the acclaimed Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, shares stories about Fred Rogers, and how he showed him the true meaning of kindness on and off camera. The subject line read, in all caps, by the way,

great opportunity, must read with three exclamation points afterwards.

I absolutely thought it was some kind of fishing scam, so I held off opening it for weeks.

But luckily my curiosity was stronger than my interest in cyber security,

0:26.0

so I opened it.

0:28.0

It turns out this email was a legitimate invitation

0:32.0

to meet the Dalai Lama.

0:34.0

Yeah, the Dalai Lama.

0:37.0

As if I didn't already realize, Matt made sure I knew

0:39.8

how big of a deal this opportunity would be.

0:42.4

His whole life is like a history of the 20th and 21st century.

0:46.0

FDR, President Roosevelt gifted him a watch.

0:50.0

That is so long ago.

0:52.0

His man has met every important person to ever live in the last century and the century.

0:57.0

Oh, and there's one more thing the email said that I forgot to mention.

1:01.0

Not only would I get to meet the Dalai Lama, but I would also get to ask him a question. One single question.

1:08.0

And he's probably been asked every single question that you can imagine.

1:12.0

So you have to come up with something that is so

1:14.0

different. Thanks Matt, no pressure. But as if thinking of the question wasn't

1:19.5

complicated enough, I'd have to fly to the other side of the planet to present it to him, which

1:24.8

felt like a lot of work, so I was thinking it was probably a no-go.
