If by chance you are a frequent listener to the podcast, you will know that when you hear my voice

right at the very beginning, that is a little program note. And what it usually means is that I'm

going to be coming on to tell you that we are doing a multi-part episode. And yes, this is

definitely a multi-part episode. It is a big sprawling case.

The main thing that I wanted to say, though, is that there are at least two mysteries connected

to this case that are not directly related to the case of the Patanella that we could cover.

today's mystery.

What follows is a recreation of the second to last transmission ever made by the schooner, Pat Nala.

I believe we've run out of fuel. We've hoisted ourselves and we're attacking it to the east.

Tracking about 080. Our intention is to tack out for a couple of hours and then tack back in. We may need some assistance in the morning to get back in to Sydney Harbour.

Now that's innocuous enough, I suppose. Perhaps a little alarming about their fuel situation.

But the Schooner's final transmission was similarly unconcerning, but also stranger.
