My guest this week is Jim Bruton. Jim lived and worked in Africa on and off for 14 years. He won an Emmy for his work with National Geographic Television. He was also a TV journalist for CNN and NBC, where he reported live from war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is here on the past lives podcast to speak to us about his remarkable near-death experience.

Hi, Jim, welcome to the Past Lives podcast.

First of all, just to start off, could you tell us about your background?

I was born in Key West.

It's almost like saying you were born in Disneyland.

You don't meet a lot of people born there.

My dad was in the Navy.

But in growing up, it was the very conservative South in the 1960s. And so I, you know, I was sort of raised in that environment. And yet I always felt different from that environment.
