Summary

In early ‘80s California, a new kind of music was brewing that blended the psychedelic sounds of the '60s with the modern day post-punk ethos. This week, hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot reflect on the Paisley Underground movement. They'll discuss the prominent bands like The Bangles, explore what made the scene so special and explain its impact on indie rock. Jim and Greg will also look back at the 1964 hit by The Shangri-Las, "Leader of the Pack," almost 60 years later. Plus, they'll review the new record from The Hives.

You're listening to Sound Opinions and this week we're going to do a genre

0:36.6

dissection on the 80s psychedelic rock scene in Southern California, the paisley

0:41.6

underground. I'm Jim D. Worgas and I'm Greg Cutt will also explore the origins

0:46.6

of the Shangri-La's influential song, Leader of the Pack, but first some new music

0:51.9

from The Hives.

1:19.4

That's a little bit of bogus operandi from The Hives new album, The Death of Randy

Fitzsimmons. I love how that song opens. Oops, overslept.

1:31.4

So basically they're tongue-in-cheek attitude towards this is the first album in what,

11 years? 11 years, right? The Swedish pop garage rock band just blew up in the early

1:45.8

2000s, late 90s. Part of that wave of garage rock bands. This was sort of the

1:52.7

Swedish response to what was going on in places like New York City at the time.

2:20.8

and documenting their records basically defined that sound for a new era. Great sense of humor,

2:28.2

you know? Yeah. I mean, you've got three chords. You've got skinny pants and you've got humor.

2:33.0

You've got, you know, this genre of music. Well, part of the humor extends to Randy Fitzsimmons.

2:40.8

2:45.8

you know, creation designed to hide someone who was actually writing the songs. Randy Fitzsimmons
