Today we're discussing the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Here's what you need to know.

At least 800 years ago, Polynesians from the Marqueses Islands arrived on Hawaiian land,

having voyaged in canoes for nearly 2,000 miles across the ocean.

In ancient Hawaii, the islands where individual kingdoms run by Ali Nui, the king.

After British explorer James Cook landed in Hawaii in the late 1770s,

the ruler of the Hawaii Island, Kamehameha the Great,

waged a campaign with the assistance of European advisers and weapons to unite the islands.

In 1810, Kamehameha became the first king of the Hawaiian Kingdom,

transforming the islands into an independent constitutional monarchy.
