Summary

Chicago’s got a new ad campaign the city hopes will showcase Chicago’s influence around the globe. It reminded us of a question we answered about the origins of Chicago’s rivalry with New York. We actually took the answer to the stage and presented it as a live show in 2018 at the Museum of Science and Industry, with actors impersonating New York and Chicago. In this episode you’ll hear that performance and learn how the bid to host the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition stoked Chicago’s rivalry with New York.

0:05.3	cities launched called Chicago, not in Chicago. City officials say it's meant to bolster local pride,
0:15.0	attract new business, and get more tourists to come visit. It's supposed to do that by highlighting
0:19.9	the way Chicago has influenced cities around the world,
0:23.3	something we know a thing or two about here at Curious City.
0:28.9	Anyway, the ads are running all around the country, and the first video that's been released
0:33.8	features a guided tour on a double-decker bus in New York.
0:37.8	We are on a tour of Chicago that's not in Chicago, but in New York.
0:45.3	We're going to show you some things in New York that wouldn't be here without Chicago.
0:51.4	As the tour proceeds, the guide points out all the things invented in Chicago.
0:56.1	You will see skyscrapers, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, the One World
1:01.5	Tower. None of those would be here without Chicago.
1:04.8	The skyscraper and the architectural technology to build skyscrapers comes from Chicago.

1:12.2	Now, right up here is one of the hottest clubs in New York City and guest warehouse music

1:18.5	Now, we're not here to debate whether this ad campaign is a good idea or a bad idea.

1:26.0	But it did remind us of a question we answered a few years ago about the ongoing rivalry

1:33.3	It actually dates all the way back to the 1893 World's Fair.
