Last summer, when the Black Lives Matter protests came rolling through my town, I was forced

into a conversation about it with my son and daughter.

I don't mean forced like I didn't want to have the conversation, but it came about very

spontaneously and it really forced me to do a lot of reading and a lot of researching

in order to give a better answer than the answer I originally gave.

My kids don't understand any of it and they're 11 and 14.

They understand inequality and racial injustice and they're being taught a lot of the right things

in school, but the bigger question of how it came to be this way was really something

We had a couple of nights, consecutive nights with the marches coming through our town and

a lot of the high school kids and people in their 20s and 30s from my town joined these

marches that were originating in towns next door.

I think for the most part, there was good participation on the part of younger people and then

you had kids, my son's 11, my daughter's 14 and they're not running to join a march,

but they rely on their parents and their teachers to supply them with information.

My daughter just said very nonchalantly, she's just like, Dad, why is it even like this?
