Summary

Brad talks with Dr. Matthew Boedy, Associate Professor of English at the University of North Georgia, about the rising young star of Christian nationalist circles and the GOP writ large--Charlie Kirk. Dr. Boedy traces Kirk's "conversion" from young conservative to staunch Christian nationalist. According to him, one of the reasons Kirk has become America's Christian nationalist youth pastor is his marriage of traditional conservative talking points with apocalyptic rhetoric surrounding the fate of the nation and its departure from the Founders' vision for a "Christian" country. The scary thing: Kirk's organization is a 30 million dollar enterprise that is implementing Christian nationalist curricula in youth groups and schools all across the country in order to radicalize young people in the name of a Republican Jesus. patrons uh you've really shown your support in incredibly flattering and overwhelming

0:28.6

ways over the last week or two and uh it's just hard to say how grateful I am to you.

0:33.7

thank you. For those of you who haven't heard the news yet, I've made the

0:37.1

decision to step away from my position at Skidmore, which is really hard. If you

0:42.8

know anything about academia, you know how hard it is to get a tenure track job.

0:45.7

And if you get one, you kind of have to think about sticking with it because it's

0:50.3

really hard to get another one. And I decided to step away for a number of

0:53.4

reasons related to family, related to prioritizing my wife's career and her

1:00.7

pathway. And also, we have a child that we're expecting in a couple of

1:04.9

months, where it's our first and we're incredibly excited. But it also means

1:08.8

just changes and trying to figure out the long-term future. And it seems like

1:12.5

for us to do that with the best decision is stepping away from Skidmore and

1:17.5

staying in California permanently where we can be closer to family and

1:20.8

friends and more of my wife can pursue her career and other things. One of the

1:25.6

other reasons is that I really am looking forward to doing this show with more

1:29.5

intention. And what I mean by that is I think a lot of you think of being in

1:34.2

academia as having the freedom to do things like straight white American

1:37.5

Jesus and having the blessing of those who decide your tenure cases and other

1:43.8

things. But in many ways, many people view this kind of work as kind of a hobby
