You ever walk out of a meeting thinking that you made real progress? Only to realize later,

nothing actually changed. That happened to me not too long ago,

and what unfolded next might just change how you lead forever. A department director came to me

and said, I'm here because I want to bridge the gap between departments and support the growth

and overall initiatives of the business. Sounds impressive, right?

All the buzzwords, beautifully rehearsed.

Totally meaningless.

So I asked the question that stopped them cold.

What do you want to have happen?

And they stared at me.

So I clarified, what behavior are we doing that you'd like us to stop? Or what are we not doing that you'd like us to stop?

Or what are we not doing that you'd like us to start?

Still nothing.

They had scheduled the meeting, filed the complaint, expressed the frustration,

but had no clarity on the actual behavior that needed to change.

Now, before you nod your head and think,
