Summary

You may have seen Avery Francis pop up in your friend’s instagram stories or newsfeeds because in just a week’s time, Avery’s work has gained massive attention and tens of thousands of new followers. But the story doesn’t begin or end there. Avery is a mixed-race Black woman with expertise in Diversity & Inclusion, while also being a serial entrepreneur. However, this didn’t stop her from being gaslighted in the workplace, by a white woman. In order to gain understanding on things like microaggressions, gaslighting, race & privilege, it can be helpful to hear the experiences first hand. Avery is here to share her story.

Francis, this is our guest today. And her and I met because we, I think we just followed each

0:43.8

other online. And at one point, we've talked about calling in before, but she actually called me in on the

0:48.2

fact that I was speaking a lot at events that were incredibly whitewash. And since then,

0:54.1

she saw that I could do great things,

0:56.9

but more wanted to invest in that in a really tangible way. And we ended up having so many

1:02.0

amazing conversations, ended up changing the way I took on speaking engagements, and really just

1:07.9

grew into so many learning lessons along the way. And so I'm really excited to bring her on today

1:13.9

to have some like really good conversation. So Avery, welcome. Hi. Thank you. Thanks for having me today.

1:21.9

I'm so stoked. It's funny. I will never forget the day that you sent me that message. And I was like, I don't know, because we'd been so

1:29.5

friendly. So it just felt like when we hear any type of even constructive criticism, everything inside of

1:34.8

us just like your hair just stands and your just back goes up and you're ready. And I remember I

1:40.5

looked at it at a stoplight, which I should not have been doing. But it forced me to put my

1:44.6

phone down and I was like, no, can't. And I can't even. I have to process this. And through that point

1:51.0

from that stoplight to being home, gave me so much time to digest and put my reputation aside,

1:57.8

put all my defensiveness aside and listen. And I'm so glad I did. I'm so glad that I was
