Summary

When did the Old West truly begin, and when did it finally come to an end? Some trace the Wild West’s start to the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, while others think it was much late,r as cowboys started trailing herds out of Texas. As for the end, many point to 1890, when the U.S. Census Bureau declared the frontier closed and Wounded Knee marked the last big clash between the Indigenous and the U.S. Army. But where does the true lie? Did the Old West really begin with the Lewis and Clark Expedition, or was it much earlier when the acquisition of the horse forever changed the landscape of the Great Plains? And if the Old West was over by 1890, then why did stagecoach robberies and gunfights continue well into the early 1900s? Also discussed are Apache raids from the 1930s, the Billy the Kid wannabe John Miller, Billy Dixon, Clay Allison, my favorite drink of choice, and much more! 0:39.4

This is a great question that I've probably spent way too much time contemplating, but unfortunately,

0:45.0

I don't think there's an answer. In all actuality, the Old West or the Wild West, whatever you

0:50.2

want to call it, it's really more of a concept than a defined historical time period.

0:55.5

For me, just as a very fast and loose definition, I oftentimes think of the old West as

1:00.7

being everything that occurred west of the Mississippi River during the 19th century.

1:05.4

That covers the mountain men, the wagon trains, the Indian Wars, the Cowboys, all that good stuff.

1:12.6

But like I said, that's a very loose definition. Truth is, people have been migrating West and living on the frontier pretty

1:18.0

much ever since the Pilgrims first arrived. I mean, at one point, Ohio was considered the frontier.

1:24.1

And if you think about it, there's not a lot of difference between Daniel Boone hunting in the

1:28.0

forest of Pennsylvania in the 1750s and Jim Bridger trapping for Beaver in Montana in the 1830s.

1:35.1

They were both operating in what was then considered the frontier, completely self-reliant,

1:40.3

cut off from so-called civilization, and surrounded by indigenous tribes who may not have always been that friendly.

1:47.1

I think for most people, though, if you were to randomly ask like 100 people on the street, what do they envision when they think about the Old West?

1:54.3

99% of the time, they're going to say cowboys.

1:57.8

And if that's the case, then we're talking about a very, very brief period, just a little

2:02.0

over 20 years. The long-range cattle drives didn't start in earnest until after the Civil War,

2:08.0

and by the late 1880s, they were pretty much the thing of the past. Did Cowboys exist prior to the Civil
