I learned early that there are two kinds of silence.

There's the ordinary kind, an empty room, a hallway at night, the pause between

a question and an answer. And then there's the other kind, the kind that feels occupied,

even when nothing is visible. The kind that makes you instinctively lower your voice, not because

you're afraid, but because you get the

sense someone is already there. That second kind of silence has been part of my life for as long as I

can remember. I don't share these stories with many people, not because I'm ashamed, but because I've

met enough scoffers to know how quickly something personal can turn into a joke.

My family has witnessed plenty of it themselves, so I never had to convince them.

My best friend knows, too, because she's seen the way certain moments settle over me,

like I'm listening to something that no one else can hear.

I'm 23 now.

Most of this started when I was too young to understand what I was seeing. One of my earliest memories is from when I was three years old.

We were leaving our local food store and across the road was a small, old cemetery,

the kind you can pass a hundred times without really looking.

That day I looked.

I tugged at my dad's hand and pointed because I saw a woman sitting inside the cemetery.

She was dressed in black and white, seated on what looked like a stone slab, hands clasped together, as if she were praying.

I remember the stillness of her posture and the strange certainty I felt in that moment,

like the world had paused so I could notice her.
