Wouldn't ordinarily do this because it might seem boring, but I want to read through

the winners of the 2023 Pulitzer prizes, the most prestigious award in American journalism,

the career maker, the thing that is cited when you die in your orbit if you are an American working

newspaper man or magazine journalist increasingly, as the highlight of your career having won a Pulitzer,

and like everything else in American life, the Pulitzers are follow the fashions of our time,

and will tend to award things that are in a chic delineation or a chic category or cover

material that is deemed important by the world of conventional wisdom. But I want to read this

out loud and then we'll talk about why. I think you'll figure it out as I'm reading it. Okay,

I'm not going to, so we're going to start with breaking news reporting.

Awarded to the staff of the Los Angeles Times for revealing a secretly recorded conversation

among city officials that included racist comments followed by coverage of the rapidly resulting

turmoil. Okay, investigative reporting. Awarded to the staff of the Los Angeles Journal for

sharp accountability reporting on financial conflicts of interest among officials at 50 federal

agencies. Okay, so neither of those as I would say particularly controversial one is racially charged,

so you can understand why that would seem more important to them than others. Okay, explanatory

reporting. Awarded to Caitlin Dickerson of the Atlantic for deeply reported and compelling

accounting of the Trump administration policy that forcefully separated migrant children from their
