Summary

Back in 2007, the world was thrilled to discover there was a new cryptid—or alien—or something—on the scene: The Fresno Nightcrawler. And even better, it was absolutely adorable (as long as you have a fondness for walking pants). But what evidence exists for this mysterious new creature?

I'm Lauren Norton, and this is one strange thing, the show where we search the nation's news archives for stories that can't quite be explained.

0:33.7

Thank you. Strangers, we think that it's safe to say that, as of late, the world has been distinctly lacking in magic.

0:40.1

There's an alarming vacuum when it comes to genuine, sweeping wonder, the kind of fantastic story that strikes a chord in a town or a state and gathers everyone up in the excitement

0:47.1

of wanting to believe. Let it be said, we do enjoy our creepypastas and our viral videos.

0:55.1

We hope that's obvious.

0:56.7

But the purely digital spread of this or that creature or the hundredth-threaded spooky tale

1:02.9

lacks a certain something.

1:06.6

As we sift through the news archives, and we rediscover the last century's bizarre tales of vampire panics and bleeding houses and haunted furniture, we can't help but be a little jealous.

1:20.6

As soon as something interesting hits our news feeds today, it's explained away as AI in less than five minutes. There's no drama to it. Of course,

1:31.9

the internet is going to be a part of any modern paranormal story. We can't live without it.

1:37.9

And we'd have a hard time delivering podcast to you if we had to do that manually. But we do

1:43.7

pine for a good local story that springs

1:46.8

up in the regional news. That's why we were so pleased when we first encountered a tale that

1:53.4

popped up in Fresno, California back in 2007. Now, Fresno does have at least some reputation for being, well, strange. Perhaps not

2:05.5

nationally, as the city is more properly known for being in the San Joaquin Valley and being home

2:11.5

to a vast array of agriculture and architecture. But if you dig just a little deeper, and we have, you'll uncover a nice

2:20.1

little lizardy underbelly of the unexplained. In fact, there's an entire website Weird Fresno

2:27.1

devoted to the subject. Its author, Michael Banty, has been tracking the San Joaquin Valley's

2:32.9

unexplained news and digging into its

2:35.4

shadowy history since 2008. And it's safe to say that he has not run out of material. With a tone

2:42.3

varying from serious documentation to respectful bemusement, Michael's blog details everything from UFOs to a

2:50.3

quote, supposedly evil gnome that was terrorizing a farmhouse.
