Summary
At the time, it didn’t feel like anything worth holding onto.
He was eleven, sent downstairs during a routine church night to grab something from the basement. It was quiet, the kind of quiet that always felt a little different from the rest of the building, but nothing about it seemed out of place.
And then he saw her.
It didn’t startle him. It didn’t feel wrong. It was just one of those moments that didn’t seem important enough to question, especially when someone else offered a simple explanation and moved on.
So he did too. The memory faded the way most small things do, eventually becoming something he barely thought about at all.
Until years later, when a detail came up that didn’t line up. And once it didn’t…there wasn’t a way to make it fit again.

| 0:15.1 | He was around 11 the year it happened, old enough to be trusted on his own, but still young enough that most things didn't feel |
| 0:21.1 | unusual for very long. Wednesday nights were always the same. His family went to church for the |

| 0:31.7 | activities, or whatever else was planned that week. It was routine, familiar, the kind of place where nothing ever really felt |
| 0:39.5 | out of place. The building itself had been there for decades, maybe longer. It had been added on |
| 0:45.1 | to over the years, but the older sections still showed through, narrow hallways, uneven |
| 0:51.0 | floors, and a basement that stretched out beneath everything. The basement was where they |

| 1:09.4 | It wasn't that anything had ever happened. It just felt different from the rest of the building, quieter in a way that didn't like going down there alone. It wasn't that anything had ever happened. It just felt |
| 1:11.6 | different from the rest of the building, quieter in a way that didn't feel completely empty. |
| 1:17.1 | Still, it was part of the routine, and like everything else about those nights, it was something |
| 1:22.3 | you got used to. That night had started like any other. The kids had been moving between rooms, some working on a project, others just talking |
| 1:30.7 | while they waited for things to start. |
| 1:33.7 | At some point, one of the adults asked if someone could go downstairs and bring up a stack |
| 1:37.8 | of folding chairs from the storage area. |
| 1:40.3 | He volunteered without thinking much about it. |
| 1:42.8 | It wasn't unusual. |
| 1:44.5 | People were always being sent down for something, extra supplies, drinks, chairs. |
| 1:49.7 | Most of the time, two kids would go together, but this time everyone else was busy, and it didn't seem like a big deal. |
