Being stationed overseas sounds romantic… until the house doesn’t want you there.

In this listener story, a 19-year-old airman is living in a renovated home in a tiny village in northern Italy — surrounded by scorched, ruined buildings and centuries of history. At first it’s nothing: little noises in the kitchen, easy to blame on the roommate’s cat. But within days, it ramps up. Furniture shifting. Loud banging at night. And then the nightmares start.

Not normal dreams — vivid, violent, paralyzing ones. He wakes up screaming, soaked in sweat, unable to move. One night, he hears a rushing, “whishing” sound that grows so loud it drowns out everything. He looks toward his feet and sees it: a dark figure reaching for his legs… and pulling.

He snaps out of it and does the only sane thing — grabs a blanket and sleeps on his roommate’s floor.
