I'm Mark Joseph Stern in for Dahlia Lothwick this week. We are a little over a week away from the start of the new Supreme Court term,

and the first week of arguments will not be a gentle beginning.

On the second day of its term,

the court will hear a potential blockbuster

of a gun rights case that has huge public safety implications.

And guess what?

It comes to the court atop a wave of dark money. On this

week's amicus we're talking untraceable guns and untraceable money in Garland

versus van der stock. in Garland versus Vandersdock.

This case concerns so-called ghost guns, which are sold as kits that can be bought online

and assembled in the comfort of your own home in a matter of minutes to make

an unlicensed, untraceable, fully functioning firearm, even an AR-15 style semi-automatic weapon.

In 2022, the Biden administration

issued a new rule restricting the sale of ghost gun kits

under the Gun Control Act of 1968.

A group of ghost gun sellers and enthusiasts sued arguing that the

rule was not authorized by statute. Lower courts attempted to block it

nationwide but the Supreme Court intervened and let it take effect.
