Summary

In this panel conversation from Blister Summit 2025, we discuss why all of your outdoor apparel recently changed — and how that will impact your own experiences.

Specifically, we’re talking about the ban on PFAS chemicals; why they’d been so extensively used in outdoor apparel (and far beyond); the real-world performance differences between them and new PFAS-free alternatives; and what you need to know to make the most of your own apparel.

To cover all of this, we brought together an excellent panel of industry professionals, including Eric Wallis (Patagonia), Dan Abrams (Flylow), Tom Mason (Ortovox), and Ross Herr (Rab).

My name is Luke Kappa. I am the managing editor at Blister, and you can check out everything we're doing and reviewing over at blister review.com.

For today's episode, we're airing one of our panel sessions from Blister Summit 2025.

0:23.8

This one is focused on one of my favorite topics, technical apparel, and why just about all

0:29.2

of it has changed in the past year or so.

0:31.7

Specifically, we're talking about the ban on Phafos chemicals, which have historically been

0:36.6

used in countless applications across many

0:39.2

industries, but that includes many of the waterproof breathable membranes in our outerware, such as

0:44.9

as Gortex, as well as the DWR or durable water repellent finishes that are applied to tons of

0:51.3

outdoor apparel, backpacks, accessories, and more. Now, these chemicals were

0:56.6

very good at their jobs in the case of apparel. They're typically used to repel, water, and oils,

1:02.4

but they did not readily break down over time, which garnered the nickname Forever chemicals,

1:07.6

and they've been linked to adverse health effects. So, apparel companies have had to make

1:12.6

a huge industry-wide shift away from them, and in this conversation, we drill down on what that

1:18.5

actually means for those of us who rely on apparel to keep us dry in the snow and the rain,

1:23.7

comfortable on the trails, and who expect that performance to hold up in the long run.

1:29.2

Now, to teach us about the current state of the industry and the real-world differences with

1:33.5

these P-FOS-free fabrics and treatments, we brought together a great panel.

1:38.0

You'll hear from Eric Wallace, the Global Product Director for Snow and Mountain Bike at Patagonia,

1:43.1

Dan Abrams, the co-founder and president

1:45.2

of Flylo, Tom Mason, the national brand manager at Ordovox, and Ross Hurd, the VP of Sales at Rab, USA.

1:53.3

They do a great job of giving the backstory on P-Fos use and apparel, how outdoor apparel is just
