This is the story of Carter Trebly, the boy who found out his parents were getting him a pet dog for his birthday. It was supposed to be a big surprise, but sometimes surprises can be hard for

parents. There's a reason parents

never get hired to become top secret spies. The first mistake Carter's parents made was thinking

that if you're not in the same room as them, then you can't hear them. Discussing buying a dog

in the kitchen while someone is in the dining room is not being very top secret. Perhaps they

thought that they were safe because

they often had to ask Carter questions three times before getting an answer and wondered if maybe

he couldn't hear very well. Carter, did you remember to do your homework? Carter, did you remember to do

your homework? Carter, did you remember to do your homework?

Uh, sorry, didn't hear you.

And I don't think that homework is quite finished yet or started.

Best I get my brain warmed up with some TV first.

The second mistake Carter's parents made was thinking that there was such a thing as a safe

hiding place in a house where kids live. When you're playing hide-and-seek and see a massive bag of

dog food tucked away in the furnace room, it's going to raise some questions. Their third mistake

was not knowing what to do with their faces whenever Carter asked them if he could get a dog for his birthday, which happened at least 20 times a day. It was far too obvious that they were
