Summary

865. The USDA unveiled the 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and the "Inverted Pyramid" has been sparking a lot of discussion. After a decade of MyPlate, why is the government returning to a pyramid visual—and why is it upside down?

In this episode, Monica breaks down the major shifts in the new US guidance, including:

  • The protein pivot: Why protein is taking center stage and what it means for your health.
  • The plant-based omission: Why beans and legumes were left out of the new visuals despite the scientific evidence.
  • The global gap: How the new US pyramid compares to the UK’s Eatwell Guide and Canada’s food plate.
  • AHA vs. USDA: Why the American Heart Association is issuing its own "course correction" on salt and saturated fat.

This episode will help you navigate these changes without losing sight of common-sense nutrition.

Honestly, it's not entirely one or the other. So let's try to sort it out.

0:44.1

questions from you about the new food pyramid that was rolled out by the USDA as part of the

0:49.9

most recent update to the dietary guidelines for Americans. Many of you wondered how this new U.S.

0:57.5

guidance aligns with dietary guidance from other countries around the world. Some of you asked

1:03.4

about the alternative guidance that was recently released by the American Heart Association,

1:08.1

which differs from the USDA advice in some important ways,

1:13.0

although, as we'll discuss, the differences may be more on the surface appearance than in the

1:17.4

underlying detail. And some of you were just curious about whether I think these new guidelines

1:22.2

are a step forward or back in terms of scientific validity or practical applications.

1:29.4

So now that the dust has settled a little bit, I thought I'd weigh in.

1:33.8

Historically, the dietary guidelines have been updated every five years

1:38.4

as the culmination of a years-long process involving dozens of high-level food and nutrition scientists who hash

1:46.6

through the ever-evolving body of evidence and they attempt to reach a consensus on key questions

1:53.2

about how we should eat. And in fact, the committee gets a list of specific questions to focus on
