Today's tip is to cut down on conference call multitasking.

It is so easy to try to do something else while on the phone.

But there are a few tricks that can help you pay more attention, including by doing some other forms of multitasking that still allow you to be mentally present.

If you're working from home these days, you're probably spending a lot more time on the phone.

On your average conference call, I bet that at least half the people who are not talking are checking email or surfing the web.

I know I have been guilty of this, and I also know that it won't turn out well.

All of a sudden someone is asking, hey Laura, what did you think of that idea?

And I'm like, what idea?

To be sure, many conference calls drag on forever, and people do have to check their email.

But in general, if you can check email while on a call, maybe you shouldn't be on that call.

If you should be on the call, then you shouldn't be checking email.

Simple as that.

Still, resisting temptation is hard, but there are a few things you can do.

First, while everyone is loving to hate Zoom calls, one big upside of video is that it's hard to scroll around on your phone when everyone is watching you do it.

So, when in doubt, make calls into video calls.
