Hello and welcome to the witness history podcast with me, Vicki Carter.

Today I'm taking you back to the 1940s, to the Channel Islands, the only part of British

territory for the Nazis invaded in World War II.

It's the story of a woman from there who died in a German concentration camp.

She was too trustful, she was eventually denounced a long story, she finished up at Ravensbrook.

That's Bobbless Swerp, speaking to the BBC in 2013, talking about Luisa Gould, the

woman who ran the local shop in St. Wands on the island of Jersey.

Jersey is the largest of seven small islands in the English Channel, known as the Channel

Islands.

Britain demilitarized the islands on the 19th of June 1940, many people evacuated.

Nine days later, the Germans sent over bombers, killing 44 people.

They demanded the island surrender by dropping a letter from an aeroplane.

Bobb, who was 19 at the time, saw it.

On that Monday morning, I was working up very early.

I could see this German plane and two parachutes dropped and I thought,

oh, that's how they're going to land.

Two cylinders were being dropped with parachutes and we learned later that they were

addressed to the commander-in-chief, they assumed there was one.

And there was an emergency meeting of the states of Jersey to hear of this ultimatum,

which was going to be blanket bombing.

If by, I think it was six o'clock in the following morning,

there were not white crosses painted and signs of surrender everywhere.
