All right, men, welcome back to the man talk show. I'm Connor Beaton. And today, as I'm moving

0:05.4

around my microphone, we're going to be talking about the myth of male vulnerability. Should you as a

0:10.4

man be more vulnerable? And this is from my book, Men's Work, which is out on January 23rd.

0:16.6

You can pre-order it right now on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, all the major bookstores. But in it,

0:21.7

I talk about this notion that there's this sort of conundrum that men are being put in within our

0:26.7

modern culture. And this conundrum is that when we look at how men are struggling, and you know,

0:32.7

you see this all the time in the news, men are struggling, men are in decline, men are suffering,

0:38.2

where have all the good men gone, all this kind of stuff, which is true in the news. Men are struggling. Men are in decline. Men are suffering. Where have all the good men gone? All this kind of stuff. Which is true in some regards, right? We can sort of see that

0:43.5

men are suffering and struggling. The solution that's being presented to men that I've seen

0:49.8

oftentimes from women, from the mainstream narratives, is often men just need to be more vulnerable,

0:55.7

right? Men just need to open up more and express their emotions more. But there's a real

1:00.8

challenge and conundrum that comes along with simply opening up and being more vulnerable.

1:06.9

And there's a real risk for you as a man to open up and be more vulnerable, which I think we're all

1:11.9

aware of. You know, Brayne Brown talked about this in her research that we put men in a very

1:16.4

interesting bind where we tell them that they need to open up. But when men do open up, they are

1:22.8

often shamed or rejected or abandoned or people just don't generally know how to receive a man's

1:29.1

emotional vulnerability. And you can see this in a very clear example in somebody like

1:34.6

Jordan Peterson, right? Here is a man who, you know, love him or hate him or whatever your

1:39.2

perspective is on him. Here is a man who communicates his thoughts and his ideas in a very open, clear,

1:45.9

and almost vulnerable way, a very raw emotional way where he's talking about how young men

1:52.0

are struggling or suffering and he gets emotional about it. He actually allows himself,

1:56.7

whether maybe he doesn't allow himself, maybe it just comes out. But he emotes what he's actually
