It's late October of 1982 at the Terminal Island Correctional Facility in San Pedro,

California.

It's about a week since John DeLorene's arrest. John sits in his prison cell reading a Bible.

A young prison guard stops by to see him. In the short time that John has been at Terminal Island,

he and the young guard have become friendly. John attends a Bible study at the guard hosts

and the two men talk every day.

Oh, it's still reading, John?

Yeah, best way to spend my time in here. Well, have you learned anything?

I'm starting to, I think. Yeah, like what?

John has spent most of his time in his cell reflecting on his life.

The question he keeps asking himself isn't much different from the one that press has been asking.

How did someone with so much end up falling so far?

To find the answer, John has turned to the Bible.

Well, I've learned that I've been proud and I've been arrogant and I've learned that I'm a

phony. John, that's a pretty big discovery. Well, I said I was doing things to help.

I made grand statements about my love and concern for the people of Northern Ireland.

Talked about how noble my objectives were.

I was doing everything for myself. I know that.

For myself, my success, and my reputation. John, a lot of people never get that far.

That's a major step. No, I don't know if it is.

I want to be better. When I be lying, if I said I still didn't want justice,

and want people to know that I'm not guilty of all the things they're saying I did,
