During the Tudor dynasty of England, Mary Tudor was born in 1516 to her parents,

the infamous King Henry VIII, and his first wife, Catherine of Ergon.

Mary was not the male heir her father had hoped for, and when Henry left the Catholic Church

and divorced his first wife in order to wed the young Ann Bolin.

The teenage princess Mary was declared illegitimate and banished from court.

This devastating betrayal of both her and her mother reaffirmed Mary's devotion to the Catholic Church

and she refused to acknowledge her parents' divorce,

nor her father's establishment of the Church of England.
