On October 8, 1986, a young woman was born who, at the age of just 17,

would find herself in the middle of a case that, to this day, remains unsolved. So if you like your

coffee hot, but your bones chilled, sit back and start your day with a morning cup of murder.

Brianna Alexander Maitland was born on October 8, 1986 in Burlington, Vermont, to Bruce and Kelly Maitland.

Raised alongside her older brother, the Maitlands lived on a farm near the Canadian border, and were described as a pretty typical family.

Brianna, whose sources say was extremely trained in Jiu-Jitsu, decided when she was just 17 years

old that she wanted to move away from her family's home in order to gain some independence

and be closer to a group of friends. A strange move for someone so young, and who had no stressors at home, at least according to her parents,

Brianna was allowed to make the move and began attending a new high school.

Unfortunately, her new living arrangement was not a stable one.

And after moving in and out of friends' homes,

in February of 2004, she dropped out of high school altogether

and moved in with her childhood best friend,

Jillian Stout, in Sheldon, Vermont.

Things finally seemed to be leveling out for the determined teenager.
