The village of Hampton in New Brunswick, Canada, was a placid place.

That was sort of the point of Hampton, New Brunswick. It was founded in 1783 by a band of English

colonials who were loyal enough to King George not to side with the American revolutionaries,

but not so bold as to take up the fight against them. In Hampton, the settlers found a low-lying

marsh, level and flat as far as the eye could see,

and mostly cleared of trees so that the village could grow and farm.

By 1814, the population was a bit larger than 800 people, sprawled out over roughly eight square miles,

and nearly every home in town had a clear view of every other. Also, by 1814, Hampton was the seat of

Kings County, home to what passed for the local government and court, which held sessions on the

rare occasion that some judges showed up to hold them. Most importantly for this story,

Hampton was the home of the Kings County Jail, a broad, squat, unremarkable building that was about to play host to a most remarkable resident.
