four children born to middle class parents in Holland, Michigan. Though raised in a religious and

quite conservative household, Betsy developed more

liberal ideals and showed a deep concern for the underprivileged. After graduating high school

with honors in 1965, she enrolled in Hope College that fall with plans on becoming a physician

and cemented her reputation as an intellect, a feminist, and just an overall fascinating

individual.

Moving to the University of Michigan the following year and studying art and English while

living with three female roommates, by her senior year Betsy was dating a medical student named

David Wright, who, by all accounts, was her first
