It was a cold day, but the winter sun carved through the frost that coated the windows of the shops on Main Street in Brockton, Massachusetts. On a typical February morning in 1947,

the sidewalk would have been much quieter. Shopkeepers and customers would be tucked inside,

away from the cutting wind. But this wasn't a typical morning. Main Street was buzzing

with a sizable crowd. They gathered around the steps of Plymouth County District Court,

a sprawling brick building surrounded by local businesses. Reporters in dark suits and felt hats jostled one another, vying for the best position.

Meanwhile, a security guard waited impassively just outside the door.

At last, just before 10 a.m., a car pulled up to the sidewalk in front of the courthouse.

The driver, a man in a police uniform, got out and came around the back passenger side door.

The crowd seemed to collectively hold their breath.
