Some cases remain seared in the back of people's minds for decades to come.

Today's story, this particular case,

is one of those that I don't think anyone can ever forget. On February 20th, 1977, a young

girl was born who would go missing, and for decades, the man everyone believed was responsible,

was able to walk around freely. So if you like your coffee hot,

but your bones chilled, sit back and start your day with a morning cup of murder.

Kristen Denise Smart was born on February 20th in 1977 in Bavaria, West Germany, to parents

who taught military children on base before moving back to the U.S.

and settling in Stockton, California when she was a child.

After graduating from high school in 1995 and working as a lifeguard and camp counselor

in Hawaii, Kristen enrolled at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obisbo in 1996,

and attended classes for about a year.

Things were going great for the young woman,

and on the night of May 25, 1996, Memorial Day weekend,

she decided to attend a birthday party at a fraternity house, and after a

friend of hers decided to head back to the dorms early, walked into a room full of people that
