Chael Kasapolo. Today we are going back to Turkey in January 2007

when the prominent Turkish Armenian journalist Rantink was shot that in Istanbul. January the 19th 2007, Rantink, the editor-in-chief of the bilingual Turkish Armenian Weekly Agos newspaper had just arrived in front of his office building when gunshots were hurt.

It was noontime and I was at a cafe. building when gunshots were hurt.

EJ Tamakran, Turkish writer and journalist, remembers the day she lost her friend.

We were there, I guess, 15 minutes after the assassination.

Hurant was there on the payment, his face on the ground, and I remember seeing the hole in his shoe.

It was so crowded and it was hectic.

He was lying down in front of his newspaper.

While I was trying to get into the building, I stepped on his blood.

This is, I think, the most horrifying thing I've ever lived in my life, I stepped on my friend's blood.

Ranting had been shot at the age of 52

by an ultra-nationals Turkish teenager who later confessed to the crime,

saying he'd killed Ding for insulting Turks.

The building was full of people and they didn't know what to do they were just running around and

then Raquel came in her aunt's wife and then the children they all started crying and Rachal was shouting to people

around her now your Turkish state is so clean your blood is so clean now, it's cleansed by Grant's death. And she said,

we stayed in this country and because we trusted you, we trusted you to protect Hurant and she was meaning his Turkish friends and I was one of them so I felt extremely guilty.

Ranting was born into Turkey's Armenian minority.
