On June 24, 1997, 16-year-old Jake Bush and his mother returned to their Ventura, California home around noon, only to find signs of a break-in. While his mother called the police to report the burglary, Jake began inspecting the house to assess what had been taken.

Unbeknownst to them, the intruder was still inside, hiding. As Jake entered a room, he was confronted and brutally stabbed multiple times. The assailant fled the scene, leaving Jake critically injured. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Jake succumbed to his injuries during surgery.

For years, the case remained unsolved, leaving the community in anguish. It wasn't until 2014 that forensic evidence led to the arrest of Marco Casillas, who was already in custody for an unrelated crime. Casillas was later convicted and sentenced, bringing a measure of closure to Jake's family and friends.
