Summary

In the season 3 special of British Murders, I tell the tragic story of the preventable death of 6-year-old Ellie May Butler.⁣

In February 2007, when she was just 6 weeks old, Ellie was rushed to hospital with retinal haemorrhages, a subdural haemorrhage and swelling on the brain.⁣

Her father, Ben Butler, was arrested and Ellie ⁣went to live with her maternal grandparents for the next 5 years.⁣

In November 2012, Ellie was ordered back into the custody of her birth parents by High Court Judge Mary Hogg.⁣

On October 28, 2013, less than a year later, Ellie was murdered at home by her father.⁣

In this second episode of the 2 part special, we'll be focusing on the events leading up to Ellie’s death.⁣

Hello everyone and welcome to British murders, a true crime podcast that focuses exclusively on British murder cases with an occasional glimpse at horror movies. I'm your host

0:22.7

as ever, Stuart Blues, and this is part two of the season three special. As with last week,

0:29.2

this episode's original script and research, were done by my good friend Fern, the former host of

0:35.0

the Evidence of a Crime podcast. The podcast is no longer an active podcast,

0:41.0

sadly I might add, but please visit Evidenceofacrime.com.ukau.uk so that you can read some of Fern's

0:47.0

recent articles, as that is what she's focusing her time and attention on now. As with Part 1 script,

0:53.7

I have converted Fern's very professional writing into my own style,

0:57.9

so that you as an audience aren't completely thrown off by it.

1:01.6

In last week's episode, I discussed with you the events leading up to the death of six-year-old

1:06.3

Ellie Butler, whom this two-part special is focusing on.

1:10.6

This week, in Part 2, I'll discuss the events that occurred in the aftermath of

1:15.4

Ellie's death.

1:16.8

If you skip last week in order to binge both episodes simultaneously, then I praise you for

1:22.0

your patience.

1:23.0

If you haven't listened to Part 1 yet, though, please go back and listen to that first,

1:27.2

as it will

1:27.6

provide you with the full background story of this tragic case.

1:32.4

As you know, I don't often give content warnings on my show, because like I've said, this

1:36.7

is a true crime podcast, but this one, like last week's episode, really does warrant one.

1:42.4

This episode contains graphic details of serious head injuries and child abuse resulting in death,

1:48.7

which some listeners, parent or otherwise, may find extremely upsetting.

1:53.3

You have been warned.
