Summary

In 1995, the brutal murder of Memphis socialite and philanthropist Emily Fisher shattered the city's illusion of high-society tranquility. Stabbed over 50 times in her historic home, the investigation peeled back the layers of a picture-perfect family to reveal a dark world of secrets, lies, and a son's crippling drug addiction.  This week, we unravel the tragic story of the Fisher family, a case that took nearly two decades to solve and left a trail of devastation in its wake, including the death of Emily's own son. This is a southern gothic tale of how privilege and wealth are no match for the destructive power of addiction. The crime was shocking enough, but what truly horrified the city was the revelation that the man responsible was not a stranger,

but a trusted figure who lived in Emily's family's shadow.

A true crime podcast featuring myself, Mandy, and my dear friend Melissa. Hi, Melissa. Hi, Mandy. How are you? I am doing well. We are fully into 2026. I couldn't be happier. I'm happy to be here. I'm happy that my kids are back in school this week. I feel like a new leaf has been turned over.

Things are looking up for me. Oh, gosh. Yeah, mine go back Tuesday. So I've got one extra day,

1:01.4

but I'm going to enjoy that day. We're going to do more baking and stuff. My son loves to do that.

1:06.5

So I will be ruining the kitchen that I clean this weekend, but, you know, it is what it is,

1:11.2

memories and all that jazz. Yeah, I'm excited to be in a new year, new leaves, like you were saying,

1:17.7

and new habits and all those things. I'm really trying my best ever here, just really plugging along.

I love it. I love it. All right. So we'll get right into the story for this week. Emily Fisher was born on July 11th, 1942, into the kind of family where the word legacy really carried some weight, really meant something. Her parents, Arnold and Mary, were well known, well connected, and very well off, thanks to a cotton fortune that had really long kept this family

1:46.0

in cotillion stock, as the New York Daily News so elegantly put it. I'm not even sure if I fully

1:52.4

understand what that means because I'm not from that world. Quite honestly, I thought it was

1:56.5

cotton stock, just misspelled. Right. But all that to say, this family was truly Memphis High Society.

2:04.9

The family lived at 265 North McLean in a comfortable house, which is literally how it was

2:11.7

described in Memphis Magazine. But considering the family's wealth, comfortable house probably

2:17.1

means something closer to like a giant southern estate with excellent lighting for these amazing photo shoots.

2:23.4

So Arnold was a businessman and he really dabbled in everything from laundry, like businesses, rug cleaning, real estate, and even a car dealership. He also helped manage a

2:36.8

mayoral campaign back in 1960. Mary, on the other hand, was a woman of the arts. She really enjoyed

2:43.9

things like opera, theater, and ballet, and eventually she became known as the Grand Dame of the

2:50.3

Memphis Ballet Society.
