Summary

As much as we’d like to “stay in our lane”, sometimes circumstances compel us to venture outside of it, like right now. The situation regarding trans rights in Arkansas may seem like a purely political topic, but it does actually affect the cycling community as a whole, so it’s worth all of us talking about it. What should be done here? What shouldn’t be done? How should you navigate the situation so you can decide for yourself? There are no easy answers to this, but in this conversation with longtime cycling industry advocate (and PR/marketing veteran) Chris DiStefano, maybe we can all at least figure out a way to somehow move forward. Here is one resource for a bit of guidance and information about what you can do to show your support for the trans community.

Welcome back to the Cyclment Tips Podcast, everybody. I am Cayley Frets and we've got something

0:16.1

a bit different for you today. We actually want to address, well, a big issue currently coursing through the cycling world. You may have seen

0:28.7

some posts recently about the upcoming World Cyclicross championships in Arkansas, relating to some pretty horrible bills that are going through or have already gone through the legislature in that state.

0:47.2

And so we wanted to use this platform in our podcast because, well, it's an easy way to talk to you all in a way that makes a lot of sense I think

0:55.4

to just talk about this and talk about where we're coming from and also speak to

1:01.8

someone who is sort of much more personally affected by this than any of the three of us.

1:09.3

And I should say that the three of us today is myself James Wong and Abby Mickey. James, maybe you could intro

1:17.2

Krista Stefano. Yeah, so Krista Stefano is someone I've known for quite a long time. I mentioned this in the conversation

1:25.9

that I had with him that I think my first interaction with him was very early in 2006.

1:31.0

So we go back a pretty long way at this point and so he's been in the

1:35.6

industry for a very long time most people who have been in the bike industry

1:39.1

for even just a modest amount of time will at least know of him.

1:43.0

And he's based on Portland, he's been there for, I think, 15, 16 years, something like that.

1:48.0

And he has certainly taken a very vocal stance on this issue,

1:55.0

partially because he has a trans daughter.

1:59.0

So it is a very personal issue for him.

2:02.0

One thing I want to point out that this is obviously very personal for Chris.

2:07.2

If you're listening to this right now and you're thinking to yourself like you know you're throwing your hands up in the air and you're screaming

2:13.4

you know hey stay in your lane cycling tip stick to cycling so on that's that you know that sort of

2:17.2

thing this is not the first time that we have brought up a political topic as many of

2:21.5

you will know this certainly will not be the last time

2:24.4

when we do it and no doubt this is going to open us up to an awful lot of hate mail because it
