You ever wonder why he stepped out of the comfort of heaven and came to earth?

What motivates that kind of action?

What motivates the God of the universe to take on human flesh and to walk among us?

You know, as much as I like the lights and the trees and the stockings and the presence and all of

those things that we typically associate with Christmas when we look

into the windows of our living rooms, I doubt that's what motivated Jesus to come.

You know, not that there's anything really wrong with the traditions that mark Christmas

here in the United States.

It's just that I don't believe from reading the scriptures

that's what motivated the God of the universe to take on human flesh and to be born in a manger

and to die a cruel death on a cross. So what is it? What motivates him? You know, as a young father,

when Laura and I had just got married, I wanted so badly to

instill within my kids the true meaning of Christmas. And so oftentimes, I desired for them

not to get caught up in the commercialism of the traditions that often are associated with

Christmas. And I wanted them so badly to understand

the truth of God's word and the true motive of what drives the reason, as we say, for the season.

I realized that I might have gone a little bit overboard the day that I took my firstborn son

at the age of three into a mall, and he saw Santa Claus,

and he said, look, Daddy, it's Moses.

But you can't really blame him.

I mean, both of them have white beards and lists that tell us if we're naughty or nice, right?

A lot of similarities.
