This is the sound of the Muslim call to prayer.

If we lived in Turkey, or say, Saudi Arabia, this would be a familiar sound.

But here in the U.S., it's alien.

It's the sound of the other. And we tend to recoil or withdraw,

even just a little bit, from things that feel alien to us. I mean, let me put it this way.

How comfortable would you feel right now walking into a mosque? Unless you were raised Muslim,

probably not very. I'm Anne Strange, champs, and today on to the best of our knowledge, we're going to get to know one of the world's

most misunderstood places, because what we don't understand, we fear, and what we fear, we reject.

So welcome to the mosque. Our first guide is the architect Mariam

Eskandari. She's the founder of her own design firm, and she specializes in building mosques

in America. Charles Monroe Kane asked her if there are rules, and she said, just one.

There has to be a mirab, the spot that points the direction to Mecca.

Oftentimes, you'll see that it's just a carving.

But then the interesting thing is that around the carving,

some mosques might have the calligraphy, the chronic calligraphy. Other times, it might just be the carving, because, you know, some mosques might have the calligraphy, the Quranic calligraphy.

Other times, it might just be the very first verses of the Quran, which is Suriyaham, which is the

opening, and just as a reminder that, you know, God is, you know, beneficent, the most merciful.
