Ian Brady and Myra Hinley became the most hated people in Britain after they were committed

for trial following the discovery of the bodies of several children on Saddleworth More.

Many were furious that the crimes were uncovered too late for the couple to face the ultimate punishment.

But the families of their victims just hoped that justice would finally be served.

Both were charged with the murders of three children.

John Kilbride and Leslie and Danny were abducted, tortured and photographed. Edward Evans' 17-year-old student was their

last victim, who was beaten to death by Brady, and the discovery of his body in a house in

Manchester led to the arrest of the child killers. The crimes they committed left scars which will perhaps never heal as long as they're

associated with the lonely landscape where innocent children were buried.

Before the trial opened at Chester Castle on April 19, 1966,

hundreds of people had queued outside since before 6am.

The first in line for a seat in the public gallery was a 16-year-old who said, I want to be a policeman when I leave school, and I thought this was a chance to see how

things are done. Some had been drawn to watch the proceedings out of macabre fascination,

while others saw it as a learning experience.

A woman named Joy Holt told the Manchester Evening News,

It is not a morbid interest that has brought me here.
