Good evening, children. It's Granny McDuff, ready with a story. So make yourselves comfy, and I'll begin.

The moon. Once upon a time, a long, long time ago. In a land where the nights were always dark,

for the moon never rose, and the stars never dared shine in the gloom of the dark blanket that covered the sky.

There lived three young men.

They were the best of friends and had one day decided to see the world.

So they set out on their journey.

When they reached another kingdom, they found the night sky there too was nothing but darkness.

Until they came upon a town which hung a bright, sky there too was nothing but darkness.

Until they came upon a town which hung a bright shining globe on an oak tree every evening

after the sun disappeared beneath the horizon.

They found that the whole land was lit up by this globe. How beautiful the soft light looked across the landscape.

The three travellers arrived at an inn and found a man who had stopped to give a drink of water to his horse.

What light is that? They inquired. Why, that's the moon. The man replied,

Isn't it lovely? Our mayor bought it for three coin. Every day when the sun goes, he hangs it up there

and cleans it off so that it shines brightly.

We pay him a coin every month to do that job.

The man got back onto his horse and took off down the road.

Once he'd gone, one of the young men said, we've got an oak tree at home, just the same size as this.
