Houston, we have a podcast. Welcome to the official podcast of the NASA Johnson Space Center,

0:04.8

episode 294, The Moon in 4K. I'm Gary Jordan, and I'll be your host today.

0:10.2

On this podcast, we bring in the experts, scientists, engineers, and astronauts,

0:13.3

all to let you know what's going on in the world of human spaceflight and more.

0:16.6

The Artemis One mission once again reignited humanity's imagination as Orion was able to share

0:22.4

views of the moon and earth as it conducted the historic test flight. The imagery we saw from

0:28.4

Orion was absolutely fascinating, but it really pushed the limits of Orion and the bandwidth

0:34.0

capabilities of the deep space network to deliver it from Orion back to earth. This is the future,

0:39.7

though. We want 4K, we want UHD, but with constrained data rates in deep space, how do we get there?

0:47.1

Luckily, we have smart people at NASA tackling this problem. The solution to 4K imagery is just as

0:52.7

cool as the imagery itself, lasers. So to walk us through how we plan to test a laser communication

1:00.4

system called optical to Orion or O2O on the upcoming Artemis 2 mission, we have Steve Horowitz,

1:07.3

the O2O project manager. Set phasers to UHD, sit back and enjoy learning about the future of deep

1:13.6

space imagery from Steve Horowitz. Enjoy.

1:38.1

Steve Horowitz, my hero. Thank you so much for coming on Houston. We have a podcast.

1:43.1

It is my pleasure to be here. Thank you.

1:46.4

I'll tell you what, in the world of public affairs, I think a lot of the feedback we get and a lot

1:52.9

of the things that we're planning for is how do we make Artemis look better to the public?

1:59.6

I know there's these challenges with data rates and higher quality streaming when we get

2:08.0

these incredible distances like to the moon. But what you're working on is so precious to us here

2:14.8

in public affairs that I am just... I can't tell you how excited I am to be talking with you, Steve.

2:19.2

It's got to be just such a fun thing to work on. It really is. And it's been an exciting time
