Summary

The death of Britain’s longest reigning monarch is a cause of sadness for millions. But as a new unelected head of state assumes his role, now is exactly the time to debate the monarchy. Millions support having an elected head of state - but the media largely silences their voices - and even for many who support the monarchy, the passion is no longer there. Among younger voters, more support a republic and not. Is the monarchy running out of time?

Hello, hello, hello, and welcome to the show. So, kind of a bit of an internal discussion

0:15.4

with myself about whether it was worth doing this. I think it would be slightly remiss given.

0:20.4

We do show every Sunday not to talk about obviously the main event of the week, which is

0:23.9

of course the death of Britain's longest reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, is it worth

0:29.9

the increasing death rates to talk about this? Obviously we are going to talk about it,

0:34.8

and the reason we're going to talk about it is because a new unelected head of state

0:38.2

has assumed office, obviously you and I and any other British citizen, or indeed subject,

0:44.1

which is of course what we are. We've got no say over that of any description whatsoever.

0:50.3

I just kind of feel if you're going to have again a head of state, the symbol of this country,

0:55.2

and also actually not just of this country, but Australia or Canada wherever, without any

1:00.0

discussion that by itself obviously is not entirely democratic. Now, I think lots of people would

1:05.7

say, well look, this isn't the right time. Lots of people are in mourning. Millions of people

1:10.1

are obviously very sad about the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and I have nothing but respect,

1:14.7

of course, for their grief and for their mourning. But there are millions of people in this

1:19.0

country do believe in an elected head of state, and those who say it's not the time, well,

1:23.6

it never seems to be the right time to discuss the future of the monarchy. And of course,

1:29.0

for those of us who are Republicans who believe in an elected head of state, it's nothing personal.

1:33.2

I have nothing, obviously, against the Queen. I didn't know the Queen personally, but lots of

1:37.9

people had huge amounts of affection, of course, and respect for her. Now, I do think it's not that

1:43.4

long, obviously, after she died. The coverage is, I think, it's been pretty predictable. I think

1:49.6

most of us would have guessed which direction would have headed in, which is very much enforced

1:55.3

national grief. Anyone seems to be deviating from that national grief. It's been quite heavily
